ABC Challenge: Letter D - Doll House.

Hello polishaholics!

I’ll be honest (when have I been dishonest?!): I consider this manicure a new episode of my Fail series. I agree we could hold a debate on the true sense of “fail” according to its etymology opposed to its current meaning in a living and continuously evolving language. It’s of no use, so we’ll basically skip that part; with that said, I am not going to censure your comments below, I am just not feeling to embody the Grammar Inquisition today.
Fail or not, I just hated this manicure. A LOT. It lasted me around two hours, and just because I was too late to redo the whole thing before going out. The recipe for such an abominable combination is: two coats of Rituals Mystic Amethyst + one coat of China Glaze Doll House.
Doll House seems such a great glitter to add on top of any manicure. But alas, I wouldn’t want it in my stash even if it was offered to me as a present. Nasty thing… Too much clear base, too little glitter, too big glitter, you name it. I had to fish for the glitter every time, and then place it conveniently (or not, as you can see). The problem is that the base is too thick and does not allow you to move the glitter around, so you can end up with massive amounts of glitter in one spot, combined to bald spots. Wow, that was trrrrrrouble! I know now why it has seated among my untried ones for a year and a half *sigh*
Nevertheless, the good thing about this manicure is that I have two polishes less in my untried pile. I’ll have to give Mystic Amethyst another go though; such a vampy red color cannot suffer the consequences of being paired with rubbishy-Doll House. Amiright?
M.

  1. Oh, I hate glitters like this, too! It doesn't LOOK as bad as you make it sound, though :) At least it's not an untried anymore!

    1. Probably my frustration made me see it different (worse) than it really is, I am glad you don't see it the way I do though! Thanks!

  2. Ugh that must be the worst thing for glitter polishes :( Too bad to hear about it. I had a fail mani last night too & it made me so depressed! Anyways, Rituals Mystic Amethyst seems to be a pretty color though ^.^

    1. Ahhh you should post about your fails too! It makes us feel more human! I will try to swatch that Rituals later on! :)

  3. Your manicure doesn't look that bad, but I understand your point of view: as a glitter lover, I can't stand when I have to fish for the glitters. Thick clear base? No, no and again no. Neeeeeeext! :D
I have the "sister" of Doll House, which is ChG Glam, it is quite nice because glitters are smaller and (luckily) it's easy to apply.

    1. Hahaha! Next! That's exactly it! So you mean you have the nice sister :p lucky you!

  4. I agree with Sarah. It's a lovely mani. That being said, I'm witnessing the finished product, whereas u r also considering what u had hoped it to be.

My experience on that score is to let the finished product speak for itself. It's lovely.

    1. Right, my frustration talked for me I guess, but that's normal when the finished product is not even near to what you had pictured in your head.

You are right though, I should keep my veredict for myself because I'll never be impartial about it! :)

  5. I actually like the combo here, but I do hate a too thick glitter. You might try adding some polish thinner to it, maybe that would help? Or, if you're like me, you have so many glitters that one less really won't kill you lol

    1. Thanks! I should try that, but I think I just hate Doll House now :p One less worthy polish won't kill, as you say! ;)

  6. I'm not a glitter fan, but from my side of the screen it looks great, in spite of the problems :)

  7. While I totally don't see any issue with your mani, I do understand the feeling and I won't be arguing with you. If you hate it that much - it's a fail. Even if the result is stunningly pretty.
However, I do think you should give it another try after adding several drops of good quality polish thinner. If the base will not be so thick and heavy, maybe it'll behave nicer?
Of course, it might just cause the glitter to sink instead but I think it worth the shot!

    1. Thanks Jin for not arguing with me :p I'm a lawyer though, so arguing is what I do for a living! Haha! But you're totally right, what makes it a fail for me is that I personally dislike it.
I think I'll let some time pass (ten years or so) before adding thinner, I need to forgive the polish first! :p

  8. I know what you mean... it sucks when you hate your mani. If I have to do my nails twice in one day, I'm totally exhausted. I don't know how some women can end up swatching a whole collection at a time, over and over again. I think you are right Mystic Amethyst can go without glitter. I love just a plain dark color.

    1. Oh as I am so late in answering your comment I can tell you I was in a picky mood that week. On Sunday I did my nails FOUR times before being satisfied! I agree, it's exhausting!

  9. Ummm, I'm not seeing what you're seeing, but I didn't do the mani. I had my FAIL already on C - never even made it to the blog - i scrambled and re-did. I completely understand where you are coming from.
The base color did catch my eye though - very pretty.

    1. Haha! Depending on the fail it's worth to post it, I like to see some imperfection too! We're all imperfect, despite what our mother says ;) I'll re-feature Mystic Amethyst for sure, it's worth it! :)

    1. Sí, el glitter era ingente! La verdad es que acabé súper descontenta con esta manicura. Espero que hayáis descubierto que lo mejor es huir de este pintauñas!

  11. I think the mani looks great but I share your disdain for glitters with that formula. I hate stabbing around for glitter and then not being able to place it where I want.

  13. It doesn't look that awful, but I can understand your frustration. Glitter fishing is one of those things that I absolutely hate doing and I always feel a little traumatized afterwards if I have to resort to that. *hugs* <3
The base color is pretty though! :-)

  14. Oh goodness girly! It's not even an ugly mani! I actually really like it but yeah that whole glitter sticking to just one part of the nail could be super annoying so I feel your pain lol

  15. I like it! But I do hate when glitters are a pain like that. Gorgeous glitter, big pain in the butt!!

    1. RIGHT! Glitter is like my guilty pleasure, but I like it more in the bottle than when removing it!

  16. That is totally one of the reasons I hate wearing glitter!! It looks pretty despite the fact that you think it's a fail!! Reminds me of an oil spill, all the pretty colors on top of the dark...

  17. Mystic Amethyst looks great on your and I think you did a good job with a difficult glitter :)

  18. The China Glaze glitters have been super hit-or-miss for me lately... more miss than hit *glares impotently at Whirled Away*. I think you're right to give Mystic Amethyst another shot, though! That base color looks great!

  19. I hate when glitters do that! I have a Nyx that does the same for me and I hate it! Still in my stash though because I can't find a good dupe for it, yet (because yeah, the glitter idea is great, the result is not). Kwim?

  20. Ugh! I hate glitters like that! I have a feeling I will be getting rid of some polish once I get through my untrieds, heck some may not even get tried! Just looking at some make me think "Why did I freaking buy this???" LOL

  21. It's such a shame that you've had to fish them out and such:( I always find it very strange that big companies like CG don't think about those things. But I like the end results though! Your nails are very pretty :)

    1. Me too, formula should me a main concern! Applying a polish should not be a PITA, that means you will hardly wear it again! Thanks for the compliment on my nails ^^ YAY!

  22. Glitters like this are so frustrating! :( I do think it looks very nice, though! Looks very pretty on your nails!

  23. I always get sucked into buying chunky glitters because they look so pretty in the bottle and then hate them on my nail. It always makes me afraid to put more glitter on and ruin another mani!!

  24. Sucks about this glitter!!! Although it looks fabulous on your nails, I feel your pain about application...
